DAY 24 | Your Needs Are Not Negotiable
Somewhere along the way, most women learn that their needs are negotiable. That they come after everyone else's. That asking for what you need is selfish, or demanding, or too much. Pregnancy has a way of making this pattern very visible - because suddenly your needs are enormous, and the old habit of minimising them is in direct conflict with what you and your baby actually require. Today, we address that directly.
Today's Task: The Six Human Needs - Revisited
On Day 7, you audited which of your six human needs felt most threatened. Now, in Week 4, we go deeper: not just identifying which needs are threatened, but understanding how you're currently meeting them - and whether the ways you're meeting them are healthy or unhealthy.
Strategic Intervention identifies that every human need can be met in healthy, unhealthy, or neutral ways. For example: the need for certainty can be met healthily (building routines, gathering accurate information) or unhealthily (excessive Googling, reassurance-seeking, avoidance). The need for significance can be met healthily (doing meaningful work, being seen by people who matter) or unhealthily (people-pleasing, overworking, performing wellness).
The question is not just "is this need being met?" but "how is it being met, and is that serving me?"
The Needs You've Been Suppressing
In the first trimester, the needs that most commonly get suppressed - because women feel they shouldn't have them, or that they're too much, or that they'll burden others - include:
The need for rest (suppressed because there's too much to do.)
The need for emotional support (suppressed because you don't want to worry people or ask too much of people.)
The need for physical comfort (suppressed because you're 'managing.')
The need for space and solitude (suppressed because you feel guilty for wanting it.)
And the need for acknowledgement (suppressed because you haven't told anyone yet).
These suppressed needs don't disappear. They accumulate. They show up as resentment, as exhaustion, as the vague sense that something is wrong. Today, we name them.
The SI Framework - Meeting Your Needs Healthily
For each of your six human needs, the SI framework asks three questions:
Is this need currently being met?
How is it being met - healthily or unhealthily?
What would a healthy way of meeting this need look like right now, given the reality of the first trimester?
The goal is not to have all your needs perfectly met - that's not realistic in the first trimester. The goal is to move from suppression and unhealthy meeting to conscious, healthy meeting - even in small ways.
Your Needs Are Not a Burden
The belief that your needs are a burden to others is one of the most common and most damaging beliefs women carry into pregnancy.
It leads to: not asking for help when you need it, performing wellness when you're struggling, tolerating situations that aren't working, and building resentment toward people who 'should' know what you need without being told.
Your needs are not a burden. They are information. They are the map of what you require to function well. And communicating them clearly - to yourself first, then to others - is not selfishness. It's self-respect.
Remember: You cannot pour from an empty cup. And in the first trimester, your cup is already running low. Filling it is not optional. It's the work.
So let's make it easier to meet your needs, in ways that you're also comfortable with, starting today. Open the worksheet now and let's work through it, step by step, together. 🤎
