12 First Trimester Must-Haves (That Genuinely Help)
The first trimester is a whirlwind. Your body is doing something extraordinary - growing an entirely new human being - and yet from the outside, most people can't even tell. You may be exhausted beyond anything you've ever felt, nauseous at the smell of your favourite foods, and emotionally riding waves you didn't see coming. All while keeping it mostly to yourself. So, what helps? What are the first trimester must-haves?
This guide is here to make those early weeks a little more manageable. Not with a list of things you should want, but with genuinely useful, carefully considered essentials that will support your body, soothe your mind, and help you feel like yourself - even on the hard days. Whether you're newly pregnant or supporting someone who is, these are the must-haves that truly make a difference in the first trimester.

12 First Trimester Must-Haves (That Genuinely Help)
So without further ado, let's get stuck in, shall we? Here's 12 first trimester must-haves that genuinely helped me in my first trimester of pregnancy, and which I think will help you too.
1) A High-Quality Prenatal Vitamin
Before anything else, a good prenatal vitamin is the most important purchase you can make in early pregnancy. The first trimester brings rapid foetal development - neural tubes form, organs start to develop, and your baby's foundations are laid before many people even know they're pregnant.
Look for at least 400–600 mcg of folate, ideally methylfolate, plus vitamin D3, iron, iodine, choline, and omega-3 DHA. A comprehensive formula really does matter. Nature Made Prenatal Vitamins are a good shout, or One-A-Day Prenatal Advanced.
If nausea makes capsules hard to swallow, try gummies or smaller pills taken with food. Taking your vitamin at night can also help. The key is choosing one you can take consistently every day.
💊 Pro tip: Start your prenatal as early as possible — ideally before conception — and take it consistently throughout your entire pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.
I'm based in the UK and had Pregnacare Before Conception Tablets when trying to conceive, before moving onto Pregnacare Max tablets, that I continued to take through my entire pregnancy.
The nutrient information above is for general guidance only - always confirm your prenatal supplement choice with your midwife or GP.
2) Ginger Chews or Nausea Relief Drops
Morning sickness affects up to 80% of pregnant people in the first trimester, and for many it is the most debilitating part of early pregnancy.
Thankfully, ginger has been studied extensively and is one of the best-supported natural remedies for pregnancy nausea. Ginger chews, ginger drops, and ginger lozenges are easy to carry and use anywhere, and vitamin B6 supplements have also shown real benefit in clinical studies.
Always check with your midwife or GP before starting any new supplement in pregnancy, and if you're struggling to keep food or fluids down, please speak to them as hyperemesis gravidarum is a serious condition that needs proper medical support.
BONUS: Nausea Survival Tips
Keep crackers or dry biscuits by your bedside to eat before rising
Eat small, frequent meals rather than large ones
Stay hydrated with cold, clear fluids if hot drinks trigger nausea
Avoid strong smells - carry a citrus essential oil to counteract them
Rest when you can - fatigue makes nausea significantly worse
💛 Self-Love Tip: Be gentle with yourself on the days you can't eat well or keep up with normal life. Your body is doing something extraordinary, and survival mode is enough right now. You are not failing pregnancy - you are living it.
3) A Comfortable Pregnancy Pillow
Sleep can change dramatically in the first trimester, even before your bump is visible. You may find yourself waking more often, needing the loo, or struggling to fall asleep despite feeling exhausted. Pregnancy hormones - especially progesterone - can disrupt your normal sleep patterns in surprising ways.
A good pregnancy pillow, especially a C-shaped or full-body pillow, is worth every penny. It supports your hips, knees, lower back, and belly as your body changes, and sleeping with a pillow between your knees can reduce lower back strain caused by relaxin loosening your ligaments.
I got my pregnancy pillow in the first trimester and was so thankful for it, for that exact reason. By having strong, comfortable sides each side, it also got me into the habit early on to sleep on my side instead of my back and front, therefore also easing the pressure of making this change later on.
Investing in quality sleep now is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself - rest is not a luxury in pregnancy, it is a biological necessity.
💛 Self-Love Tip: Giving yourself permission to rest without guilt is one of the most radical acts of self-love in the first trimester. You don't have to earn your rest. You are already doing enough.
4) Loose, Comfortable Loungewear
Bloating is one of the earliest and least-talked-about symptoms of the first trimester. Your waistbands will feel restrictive before a single centimetre of bump is visible. Loose, breathable loungewear will become your best friends - not only in weeks 6 through 12, but far beyond.
Whatsmore, when you invest in the right maternity loungewear set - they can also double up as pregnancy-friendly PJ's (these are the ones I got first and I'm still wearing them now!) They're cute, comfortable and incredibly cost-effective, making them one of my favourite first trimester essentials. Likewise...
5) Maternity Underwear
Another surprising first trimester must-have is maternity underwear. After all, you wouldn't think you'd need it this early on, right? But bloating and sensitivity in the first trimester make regular underwear genuinely uncomfortable very early on, often before any bump is visible.
Soft, high-waisted maternity underwear sits above the waistline rather than digging into it, and the difference in daily comfort is immediate. Or, look for seamless, breathable low-cut maternity underwear in a size up from your usual - trust me, your body will thank you.
Oh, and by the way - there's no shame in having big knickers! 😉
6) The 30 Day First Trimester Support Programme
The physical symptoms and challenges of the first trimester get a lot of attention, but the emotional experience - the anxiety, the isolation of keeping a secret, the identity shift - is just as real and just as demanding. It deserves intentional, daily support, not just hoping you'll feel okay.
That's why we recommend a structured approach to emotional well-being as part of your first trimester must-haves. The 30 Day First Trimester Self Love Challenge is the perfect solution - designed to provide intentional daily support, it helps you navigate these complex feelings with a consistent practice, just as you'd rely on a good prenatal or pregnancy pillow for physical needs.
There's also FREE 3-day trial of this available - so there's no credit card or no commitment needed to start, allowing you to experience the benefits firsthand, whether you continue on with the full programme from there or not.
7) A Pregnancy Journal or Guided Notebook
Likewise, a pregnancy journal gives those feelings somewhere to go, whilst treasuring each and every stage. Most pregnancy journals are more memory books, but you can buy a blank journal to get more of your rawest or-even surprising first trimester emotions out on paper, alongside it. The Five Minute Journal is great for this.
Research consistently shows that expressive writing reduces anxiety, improves emotional processing, and helps people feel more in control during uncertain times. Beyond emotional processing, a journals also becomes a beautiful keepsake.
💛 Self-Love Tip: You don't have to be okay. Your journal is the one place where you can feel it all - the fear, the wonder, the grief, the joy - without having to explain or justify any of it. That permission is its own kind of healing.
8) A Large Water Bottle & Electrolytes
Staying hydrated in the first trimester can be surprisingly difficult: nausea, food aversions, and queasiness often make drinking enough water a real challenge. There were some days where I struggled to get ANYTHING inside me.
But hydration matters - it supports blood volume, helps reduce headaches and constipation, and supports amniotic fluid development. And so, a large insulated water bottle that keeps water cold can make a big difference, especially since cold water is often easier to tolerate. I got the HydroJug Traveler - a 40 oz water bottle with handle & flip straw, and it was surprisingly effective.
BONUS: If you're vomiting frequently or struggling to drink enough, electrolyte powders (you can always start with a sample pack) can help. Choose pregnancy-safe options without artificial sweeteners or excessive caffeine, and lean toward flavours that are less likely to trigger aversions — lemon, watermelon, and coconut are often well tolerated.
Electrolytes help your body absorb and retain fluids, replace minerals lost through vomiting, and get you through the hardest nausea stretch.
9) A Reliable Pregnancy App or Symptom Tracker
A reliable pregnancy app / symptom tracker is undoubtedly one of the biggest first trimester must-haves when everything is still so new. I stuck with the Flo App which I downloaded when trying to conceive and I couldn't recommend it more. You can:
Track Your Symptoms: Logging daily symptoms helps you spot patterns, anticipate harder days, and share accurate information with your midwife or GP. It also gives reassurance - for example, seeing that your nausea tends to peak at certain times helps you plan around it.
Monitor Your Baby's Development: Week-by-week updates are reassuring and help the pregnancy feel real. Seeing milestones like a heartbeat, tiny fingers, or facial features matters for bonding, especially before you've had a scan or felt any movement.
Not only this but it has a free community, a little like ours actually, where you can speak to like-minded women, going through their own pregnancy journey too.
10) Belly Butter or Stretch Mark Oil
Skin changes can start much earlier than most people expect. As your body shifts, even subtly, itchiness and dryness may appear across your belly, hips, and breasts, so starting a daily moisturising ritual now is far more effective than waiting until your bump is visible.
A good belly butter or stretch mark oil won't guarantee you'll avoid stretch marks entirely - genetics play a role - but it will keep your skin supple, hydrated, and more comfortable as it changes. Look for pregnancy-safe formulas free from retinol and synthetic fragrance, with ingredients like shea butter, rosehip oil, vitamin E, and cocoa butter.
I personally like Burt's Bees Mama Belly Butter Stretch Mark Cream. It's far cheaper than most on the market but just as effective / highly rated. I also like 7-Better Stretch Mark Oil, as again - it's more affordable, it's also multi-purpose and has just been my go-to for a while now.
🌿 Pro tip: Start using belly butter or oil from the moment you find out you're pregnant - don't wait for a bump. The earlier you begin, the more your skin benefits from consistent hydration.
💛 Self-Love Tip: Your body is changing to make room for new life. Tending to it with care - even just two minutes of moisturising each morning - is a small act of self-love that compounds over time. Touch your body with kindness, not criticism.
11) Pregnancy-Safe Skincare
One of the most urgent but least-discussed first trimester tasks is auditing your skincare routine. Several common ingredients - retinol, retinoids, high-dose salicylic acid, and certain chemical sunscreens - are not considered safe during pregnancy, and many people are using them daily without realising.
The first trimester, when foetal development is most rapid, is exactly when this matters most, which is why pregnancy-safe skincare products are absolutely part of your first trimester must-haves.
Go through everything you apply to your face and body and cross-reference the ingredients. Swap out anything flagged as unsafe for pregnancy-approved alternatives. This doesn't need to be expensive: many affordable, fragrance-free options are perfectly suited to pregnancy skin.
A mineral SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) is also the gold standard for pregnancy-safe sun protection and should be a daily non-negotiable — your skin may also be more sensitive to sun during pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
Pregnancy-Safe Swaps
Bakuchiol (natural retinol alternative)
Low-dose salicylic acid (under 2%, with GP approval)
Vitamin C & niacinamide for brightening
Mineral SPF (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
Hyaluronic acid & ceramides for hydration
Azelaic acid (safe and effective for skin concerns)
🧴 Pro tip: When in doubt, check any product using the Yuka app or the EWG Skin Deep database — both allow you to scan or search products for pregnancy safety ratings.
The ingredient guidance above is general in nature — if you have any skin conditions or concerns, consult your GP or dermatologist before making changes to your skincare routine during pregnancy.
12) A Good Pregnancy Book
Last but not least, a good pregnancy has to go onto your list of first trimester must-haves.
After all, apps are wonderful for week-by-week updates, but there is something irreplaceable about a well-written, evidence-based pregnancy book - one you can read at your own pace, annotate, return to, and trust. It also helps to give you the broader picture and support you through one of the most challenging stages.
We have our own pregnancy self love book coming out in September (you can sign up for early-access and freebies!), but in the meantime, here's a few that are consistently recommended and worth considering:
What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkoff: The classic, comprehensive reference. Covers every week of pregnancy, common symptoms, and what's normal. Best for: first-time parents who want a thorough, reassuring overview.
Expecting Better by Emily Oster: A data-driven look at pregnancy advice, separating evidence from myth. Best for: analytical thinkers who want to understand the why behind recommendations.
The Positive Birth Book by Milli Hill: Focuses on birth preparation and positive mindset from early pregnancy. Best for: those who want to feel empowered and informed about their birth options from the start.
💛 Self-Love Tip: Knowledge is one of the most powerful antidotes to first trimester anxiety. Understanding what your body is doing - and why - can transform fear into wonder. You deserve to feel informed, not just reassured.
That's All For This One
So that rounds up my list of first trimester must-haves.
If you've made it to the end of this list, you should now be stocked up with the practical tools, the physical comforts, and the emotional supports that can make the first trimester feel more manageable and more cared for.
When we mentioned the 30 Day First Trimester Self Love Challenge earlier in this list, it was because it deserved a place alongside the first trimester essentials - not as an afterthought, but as something that quietly supports everything else. Now, at the end, it makes even more sense to come back to it, because you've seen the full shape of what the first trimester asks of you.
By now, the pattern is clear: the journal, the movement, the rest, the books, the small comforts, the structured care - all of it becomes more powerful when it's held together by a steady daily practice. That's what this challenge offers: not a separate category, but the thread that connects the whole list into something you can actually live with day after day.
✔ A Gentle Daily Rhythm
Small, steady practices you can return to each day — simple enough to fit into real life, and consistent enough to create a sense of grounding.
✔ Made From the Inside
Built by someone who understands the first trimester personally, so the support reflects what this season actually feels like — not what it looks like from the outside.
✔ Start For FREE = Completely Risk-Free
A low-pressure way in: try it for three days, feel the difference, and decide whether the full 30-day journey is right for you.
"The first trimester can feel like a private storm - but it doesn't have to be a lonely one. Thirty days of small, thoughtful practices can create real emotional shift: less spiralling, more steadiness, and a deeper sense that you're not just getting through this season, but being held through it."
This is the bridge between surviving and thriving emotionally. Not by asking you to be cheerful, or productive, or endlessly resilient - but by meeting you where you are, day after day, and helping you feel a little more supported each time. If the physical tools make the first trimester more comfortable, this challenge helps make it feel more human.
So good luck. Take care. And I really hope you've found all of this valuable.
