And whilst it won't teach you anything clinical, it will make you feel considerably less alone at 3am, so is a great companion through those long days or sleepless nights.

    Likewise, written like advice from a friend who has been through it and is not going to sugarcoat a thing. Lovine covers the social, emotional, and physical realities of pregnancy with a candour that most official guides are too polished to offer.

    One of the biggest things my midwife kept repeating through my pregnancy was, "swat up on birthing", "swat up on birthing", and actually — I'm glad I'm listened because, as a first-time-mom-to-be with literally no birthing knowledge, it not only put my mind at ease, but helped me to go into it more confidently.

    Birthing books are one of the best pregnancy books you can get because they have all the information you need in one place, and you can go back to it, again and again, without getting distracted, googling a million other different things.

    I would therefore highly recommend one of these added to your list of books during pregnancy.

    There's endless hynobirthing books, but this is commonly referred to as the cornerstone of the hypnobirthing movement, teaching deep relaxation techniques to ease fear and tension during labor.

    I have to say I think this one is actually my favourite. It's the book I bought for my husband anyway and it made him laugh! From navigating mood swings to building a crib, it feels like advice from a friend who’s been there and knows what actually matters.
